Named after Lord Melbourne, one-time British Prime Minister, Melbourne (pronounced mel-burn) is swashbuckling Sydney’s somewhat refined cousin, widely regarded as the cultural capital of Australia. Some of its finest architectural achievements occurred after gold was struck in Victoria during the 1850s and booming Melbourne became the fastest-growing city in the British empire. Melbourne, capital of Victoria and founded by free men and women rather than convicts (as was Sydney), also claims some of Australia’s most prestigious schools and universities to accompany an impressive line-up of hotels and other lodging accommodations. Sports are big-time here, from the Melbourne Cup equestrian extravaganza on the first Tuesday of November to the tennis world’s Australian Open every January in Melbourne Park. Visitors often maximize pleasure in soaking up Melbourne’s atmosphere by just strolling around the city. When time constraints dictate seeing only one major attraction, hotel guests often opt for a trip to the Melbourne Zoo, with other favorites being the Rialto Towers Observation Deck, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Botanic Gardens.
