Named after Lord Melbourne, one-time British Prime Minister, Melbourne (pronounced mel-burn) is swashbuckling Sydney’s somewhat refined cousin, widely regarded as the cultural capital of Australia. Sports are big-time here, from the Melbourne Cup equestrian extravaganza on the first Tuesday of November to the tennis world’s Australian Open every January in Melbourne Park. Visitors often maximize pleasure in soaking up Melbourne’s atmosphere by just strolling around the city.
